It allows the dissolution of hydrophilic ingredients, such as humectants, salts, certain vitamins or plant extracts. This enables the even distribution of active ingredients in the product and their effective delivery to the skin's surface.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Woda_wplywa_rowniez_na\"><\/span>Water also affects:<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>the consistency and rheology of the product,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>ease of application and spreading,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>sensory feelings during use.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>It should be emphasised, however, that <strong>water in itself is not an active ingredient<\/strong> and does not provide long-lasting skin hydration. The conditioning effect of aqueous formulations depends on the presence of properly selected humectants, occlusive substances and ingredients that support the epidermal barrier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Woda_a_emulsje_i_inne_uklady_kosmetyczne\"><\/span><strong>Water versus emulsions and other cosmetic systems<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>In cosmetics, water is most frequently found in:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>O\/W or W\/O type emulsions,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>aqueous solutions (e.g. toners),<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>hydrogels.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In the case of emulsions, water constitutes one of the phases, but <strong>does not act as an emulsifier<\/strong>. The stability of the emulsion system is ensured by appropriately selected emulsifiers and stabilisers, whereas water influences the viscosity, spreadability and functional properties of the product. Its quantity and quality have a direct impact on the physicochemical stability of the formulation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Jakosc_wody_stosowanej_w_kosmetykach\"><\/span><strong>Quality of water used in cosmetics<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>From the point of view <a href=\"https:\/\/mpr-labs.com\">cosmetics laboratory<\/a> Water is a resource requiring special control. Water used in cosmetics production must meet rigorous requirements. <strong>chemical and microbiological purity<\/strong>, in accordance with Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) guidelines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In practice, the following are used, amongst others:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>purified water,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>demineralised water,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>reverse osmosis water.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Treatment processes include filtration, reverse osmosis, disinfection (e.g. UV) and regular microbiological monitoring (check <a href=\"https:\/\/mpr-labs.com\/badania-mikrobiologiczne\/\">microbiological tests<\/a>). Insufficient water quality can lead to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>product instabilities,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>growth of microorganisms,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>shortening of the durability,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>risks to consumer safety.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Because of this, water cannot be treated as a \u201eneutral\u201d or \u201einert\u201d ingredient in the formulation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Woda_a_bezpieczenstwo_mikrobiologiczne\"><\/span><strong>Water and microbiological safety<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The presence of water in a cosmetic product creates conditions conducive to the growth of microorganisms. Therefore, water-based formulations <strong>they always require the use of an effective preservative system<\/strong>, tailored to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The pH of the product,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>type of packaging,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>intended use,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>consumer target groups.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The preservative system is an integral part of the cosmetic safety assessment and must ensure microbiological protection throughout the declared shelf life of the product. The decision to use water in the formulation is therefore directly linked to additional requirements regarding stability studies and microbiological tests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Czy_woda_jest_zawsze_potrzebna\"><\/span><strong>Is water always needed?<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Although water is commonly used, <strong>it is not always necessary<\/strong>. In recent years, there has been growing interest in anhydrous formulations, which are used in, among others:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>oils and balms,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>ointments,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>sticks,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>powder,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>concentrated serums.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Waterless cosmetics are characterised by:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>lower microbiological risk,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>often by eliminating the need for preservatives,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>high concentration of active ingredients,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>good physicochemical stability \u2013 check <a href=\"https:\/\/mpr-labs.com\/badania-fizykochemiczne\/\">physico-chemical tests<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>For dry or sensitive skin, anhydrous formulations tend to be better tolerated, especially when they contain ingredients that support the epidermal lipid barrier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Woda_a_deklaracje_marketingowe\"><\/span><strong>Water and marketing claims<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In the context of market communication <strong>water is sometimes perceived as a \u201eless valuable\u201d ingredient or a \u201efiller\u201d<\/strong>. This approach does not reflect the actual role of water in a cosmetic formulation. From a technological standpoint, water is a functional raw material, and its presence or absence should be determined by the intended purpose of the product rather than solely by marketing expectations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Reliable communication should take into account the fact that:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>water is essential in many types of formulation,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Its quality is crucial for safety,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lack of water does not automatically mean higher product efficacy.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Rola_laboratorium_R_D_w_decyzji_o_zastosowaniu_wody\"><\/span><strong>The role of the R&amp;D laboratory in the decision to use water<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The laboratory responsible for developing the formulation should assess the justification for using water in the context of:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>product features,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>user profile,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>stability and durability,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>microbiological safety,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>compatibility with packaging.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The decision to use an aqueous or anhydrous formulation should be the result of a technological analysis and risk assessment, rather than market trends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Podsumowanie\"><\/span><strong>Summary<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Water is one of the key raw materials in cosmetics, yet its presence should not be treated as a standard requiring uncritical application.
