{"id":4981,"date":"2026-01-21T14:01:00","date_gmt":"2026-01-21T14:01:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mpr-labs.com\/?p=4981"},"modified":"2026-02-25T10:47:22","modified_gmt":"2026-02-25T10:47:22","slug":"natural-versus-synthetic-cosmetics-and-can-a-cosmetic-be-100-natural","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mpr-labs.com\/en\/kosmetyki-naturalne-a-syntetyczne-czy-kosmetyk-moze-byc-w-100-naturalny\/","title":{"rendered":"Natural vs synthetic cosmetics - can a cosmetic be 100% natural?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In the discussion about \u201enatural\u201d and \u201esynthetic\u201d cosmetics, the conceptual and methodological distinction is crucial: marketing terminology often simplifies technological reality. <strong>From a cosmetic formulation point of view, we are talking about the origin of the ingredients (plant, mineral, animal or laboratory-synthesised), <\/strong>on the methods of their processing and \u2013 equally importantly \u2013 on how the manufacturer declares and documents the \u201enaturalness\u201d of the product.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Norma <strong>ISO 16128<\/strong> (parts 1 and 2) was created to unify the language and <strong>methodology for assessing \u201enaturalness\u201d<\/strong> of raw materials and finished cosmetic products. <a href=\"https:\/\/mpr-labs.com\/norma-16128-wyliczenia-naturalnosci-dla-kosmetykow\/\">ISO 16128<\/a> it provides a computational framework \u2014 it assigns naturalness indices to individual raw materials and suggests how to combine them into percentage shares of the product, but this is not a mandatory certification or an unambiguous \u201enatural = better\u201d label. see <a href=\"https:\/\/mpr-labs.com\/badania-mikrobiologiczne\/\">microbiological tests<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>raw materials of a fully \u201enatural\u201d origin can have high quality variability, which makes it difficult to ensure consistent product efficacy and safety.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Therefore, from the perspective of an R&amp;D laboratory, it is more practical to speak of a documented percentage of naturally derived ingredients (in accordance with ISO 16128) than an imprecise slogan <strong>\u201e100% natural\u201d.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"ISO_16128_%E2%80%93_co_warto_wiedziec\"><\/span><strong>ISO 16128 \u2013 what you need to know<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The standard consists of two parts:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>ISO 16128-1: definitions and classification of ingredients by origin and description of methodology (e.g. natural origin index),<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>ISO 16128-2: calculation methodology for ingredients and finished products (including methods for assigning indices and calculating percentages).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The methodology provides for the assignment of a naturalness index to each raw material (a value from 0 to 1) and the calculation of a cumulative product indicator by the weighted summation of the shares of individual ingredients. This tool facilitates transparency: the manufacturer can demonstrate how they arrived at the declared \u201enaturally derived\u201d percentage. At the same time, the standard does not impose a single threshold that would define \u201enaturalness\u201d as a legal category.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Certyfikacje_rynkowe_%E2%80%93_COSMOS_ECOCERT_NATRUE\"><\/span><strong>Market certifications \u2013 COSMOS, ECOCERT, NATRUE<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There are several significant certification schemes operating on the market which, in addition to assessing \u201enaturalness\u201d, also take into account other criteria (raw material origins, manufacturing practices, ingredient restrictions, supply chain pathway):<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>COSMOS<\/strong> \u2014 an international standard developed and supported by several certification bodies (e.g. Ecocert, Soil Association). COSMOS offers two main labels: <em>COSMOS ORGANIC<\/em> i <em>COSMOS NATURAL<\/em>, and its requirements include minimum shares of organic ingredients (for \u201eorganic\u201d), raw material processing rules, ingredient list transparency, and limits on certain auxiliary substances. COSMOS is widely recognised on the market and has extensive technical guidelines.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>ECOCERT (Greenlife)<\/strong> \u2014 one of the first and best-known certification bodies. ECOCERT creates and implements standards (including under COSMOS) and offers accreditation for raw materials and products. As a certification body, ECOCERT evaluates, among other things, the origin of raw materials, cultivation methods (for organic ingredients) and the compliance of production with sustainable practices.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>NATRUE<\/strong> \u2014 standard focusing on the authenticity of natural cosmetics and raw materials; NATRUE classifies ingredients into several categories (natural, derived natural, nature-identical to a limited extent) and applies restrictive exclusion lists for certain groups of substances. The organisation also maintains a factsheet and position papers on the interpretation of ISO 16128.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>In practice, manufacturers often use ISO 16128 tools to internally calculate naturalness indices while simultaneously applying for COSMOS, NATRUE or ECOCERT certification to obtain an external, reliable mark for the consumer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Jak_laboratorium_R_D_powinno_podejsc_do_tematu_%E2%80%9Enaturalnosci%E2%80%9D\"><\/span><strong>How should an R&amp;D laboratory approach the topic of \u201enaturalness\u201d?<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Raw material documentation:<\/strong> collecting technical data sheets and origin documents (raw material declarations, sustainability statements) and analysing the raw material processing procedure is the basis for assigning correct indices in accordance with ISO 16128.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Security and stability:<\/strong> the assessment of physicochemical stability and microbiological risk should drive decisions on the choice of preservatives and carriers. The pursuit of a \u201eas natural as possible\u201d formulation must not come at the expense of user safety.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Communication transparency:<\/strong> If we claim that a product is \u201eX% of natural origin\u201d, we should be able to document the calculation methodology (e.g. in accordance with ISO 16128) and specify which ingredients contributed to the result.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Recognition of the value of synthetic ingredients:<\/strong> laboratory-synthesised ingredients (retinoids, peptides, certain UV filters, preservatives with a documented safety profile) often make it possible to achieve specific therapeutic results or ensure product safety. The laboratory should view \u201eorigin\u201d through the prism of function and safety, rather than an ideological \u201enatural vs synthetic\u201d divide.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Wnioski_%E2%80%93_praktyczne_rekomendacje\"><\/span><strong>Conclusions \u2013 practical recommendations<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>Don\u2019t promise \u201e100% naturalness\u201d without solid evidence.<\/em> It is better to communicate measurable indicators and rely on documentation.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Use ISO 16128 as a transparency tool,<\/em> and not as a certificate in itself.
