However, the word 'natural' itself is not unambiguous and is often interpreted in different ways. This is why the <strong>ISO standard 16128<\/strong>which is used to <strong>assessing the naturalness of cosmetic ingredients and finished cosmetic products<\/strong>. It provides precise guidelines on how to calculate the percentage of natural ingredients and natural origin in a cosmetic formulation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>ISO Standard 16128<\/strong> <strong>is not a mandatory legal requirement<\/strong>. Its use is voluntary, but more and more manufacturers are turning to it to clearly communicate the composition of their products. <strong>Naturalness calculations<\/strong> according to this standard allow consumers to be reliably informed, although they do not constitute unequivocal legal proof of a product's 'naturalness'.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Skladnik_naturalny_a_skladnik_pochodzenia_naturalnego_%E2%80%93_podstawowa_roznica\"><\/span>Natural ingredient vs. ingredient of natural origin - basic difference<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>For a proper understanding of enumeration according to the standard, it is crucial to distinguish between two terms:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Natural ingredient<\/strong> - an ingredient obtained from plants, animals, micro-organisms or minerals by physical, enzymatic or microbiological processes without chemical modification of the structure.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Ingredient of natural origin<\/strong> - an ingredient obtained from natural raw materials (plant, animal, micro-organism or mineral) by means of a chemical reaction in which the basic chemical structure has been modified.<br><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Examples:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Cold-pressed jojoba oil<\/strong> - natural ingredient.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Coco-Glucoside<\/strong> (a derivative of sugars and coconut oil) - an ingredient of natural origin, derived from sugars and fatty alcohols.<br><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>It is worth remembering that even if an ingredient has a natural source, too much chemical processing causes it to <strong>cannot be considered 'natural' according to Standard 16128.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Praktyczne_przyklady_klasyfikacji_skladnikow_wedlug_normy_ISO_16128\"><\/span>Practical examples of component classification according to ISO 16128<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Some common ingredients and their classification:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Shea butter<\/strong> - natural ingredient (mechanical pressing, filtering, possibly gentle purification without chemicals).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Lavender oil<\/strong> - natural ingredient (pressing or distillation)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Vegetable glycerine<\/strong> - an ingredient of natural origin (derived, for example, from vegetable oils).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Lauryl Glucoside<\/strong> - an ingredient of natural origin (obtained by reacting glucose (e.g. from maize) with lauryl alcohol).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Paraffin<\/strong> - synthetic ingredient (petroleum derivative).<br><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Standard 16128<\/strong> ascribes to each component the so-called <strong>naturalness index<\/strong>, which is taken into account when calculating the percentage of natural ingredients in a product.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Values are assigned for each component:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>NI = 1<\/strong> \u2192 natural ingredient<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>NI = 0-1<\/strong> \u2192 ingredient of natural origin<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>NI = 0<\/strong> \u2192 synthetic component<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Jakie_sa_glowne_roznice_miedzy_skladnikami_naturalnymi_a_pochodzenia_naturalnego\"><\/span>What are the main differences between natural and naturally derived ingredients?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Skladniki_naturalne\"><\/span><strong>Natural ingredients<\/strong>:<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>virtually unprocessed,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>retain their original properties,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Examples: plant oils, floral waters, plant extracts.<br><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Skladniki_pochodzenia_naturalnego\"><\/span><strong>Ingredients of natural origin<\/strong>:<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>come from nature, but require chemical reactions,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>may have different properties to the starting raw material,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Examples: vegetable surfactants, esters, emollients of natural origin.<br><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Awareness of this difference helps to understand that <strong>natural cosmetic<\/strong> may contain ingredients with different levels of naturalness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Najczestsze_pomylki_konsumentow_w_ocenie_naturalnosci_kosmetykow\"><\/span>The most common mistakes consumers make when assessing the naturalness of cosmetics<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Many consumers equate the name of an ingredient or the label of a product with its true composition.
